How a mentor can help you: learn how to boost your career
A mentor can greatly help develop your career, but it takes some getting used to this relationship. Let's go over some key concepts for a mentor/student relationship in this post!
Why do you need a mentor (and how they can help your career)
It’s hard reaching the next level all by yourself. You can certainly try, but generally, the best results come from shared experiences. Here’s how a mentor can help your career!
They can offer invaluable insights and feedback to help you improve and grow professionally.
By providing guidance and advice, a mentor can help you navigate your way through your career journey.
How to start a career in Human Resources?
What to do to land a successful career in Human Resources? We'll go over some of the key components of a great HR professional!
Whether you’re already working for a company or on a trade or chasing your next professional experience, being taught the ropes is something that should never be taken for granted!
In this post, we’ll teach you how to let your portfolio be enriched by someone who excels in the field you aim to develop in. Let’s understand this a little bit better, shall we?
What is a mentor and what can they do for you?
A mentor is someone who is on another level within a trade. Obi-Wan to Luke Skywalker, Morpheus to Neo, Oogway to Po. Across every platform, a great mind is vital to every major story.
Just picture what Bilbo would do without Gandalf. His story would never even start! That’s why a mentor can help you kick off your career effectively!
Learning can be a difficult task. But it doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of ways to make learning fun, interesting, and engaging.
You just have to find the right method for you. One of the best strategies to tackle it is to make it more manageable with someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.
If you’re ever feeling lost or uncertain, with a mentor, there’s always someone who knows better and is willing to lend a helping hand.
Just think of all the progress you could make with a bit of guidance!
That’s not to say all those who do something well will be great at teaching others what they do. Most of it depends on the expert’s portfolio and traits.
Besides the educational know-how, the mentor must also excel in the trade they aim to teach. Otherwise, it’d be challenging teaching said skill.

The benefits of having a mentor
When you have someone who can teach you something, it can be really beneficial. They can help you learn new things and improve your skills. Plus, it can be a lot of fun!
Let’s say you’re to start working with HR at a given company but don’t understand their guidelines yet.
Here comes the mentor, in this case probably a Sr. HR Officer! A mentor can help you understand technical knowledge better and get the bearings of a job more efficiently.
Not only are they competent at what they do and can teach you, but they can also show you more effective ways to overcome obstacles than the standard procedures.
Sometimes the quickest way to a successful career is to trust another to carry some of the burdens of rising to the top. That’s a task the mentor figure will be sure to help you the most!
How to find a mentor? Here are the best tips!
Some businesses have established mentorship programs in place.
This can be an excellent way for businesses to connect with potential new employees and help foster a love for the company and its values.
Employees can learn about the company culture and what it takes to be successful within the business. It can also be an excellent way for businesses to give back to the community.
If you’re interested in learning more, your company’s human resources department is a great resource.
They can tell you everything you need about the company’s policies and procedures.
Outside of a corporation, your best bet is to try and find a connection and network with people online. LinkedIn can be the place to start!
Joining a professional association is another excellent way to find a mentor. Many of these organizations offer programs that pair mentors with those just starting in their careers.
If you are enrolled in an educational institution, try also reaching out to college alumni associations.
They can connect you with individuals who can mentor you and help you develop professionally.
Alumni organizations can be a great way to network and learn about different career paths. They can connect fresh grads with elder alumni.
How to make the most out of your relationship with your mentor
Sometimes we fail to reap the most from an event in our lives, and that’s fine! It all leads to knowledge eventually.
But effectively reaping the rewards for your professional life is something that should take precedence.
Therefore, you must be ready to make your mentor/apprentice relationship the best it can be!
Try to be open-minded about being a student. It is not always easy to listen to what others say, especially if you’re passionate about the skill you’re trying to learn.
Swallow your pride and let the mentor help you. The first step to an efficient student/tutor relationship is for the student to acknowledge they don’t know everything.
Not everything is on account of the student, though. Mentors also need to understand some things. Given their wisdom of the situation, they should be ready to tackle such shared concepts.
Now that I know how a mentor can help me, what do I do?
